February 5, 2020
On Wednesday, February 5, William Head Institution held its first Ethno-cultural Arts Festival: Expressions of Culture through Art. Approximately 100 people including inmates, staff, volunteers, and community members attended this full day event. The morning began with a display of local artists expressing their views on culture and ethnicity in various mediums. A community lunch created by the inmates and staff followed as all joined in fellowship and conversation. The day concluded with a symposium discussing how art can be used to express and alleviate racism, and buffer and heal racism’s impact on minoritized communities.
Under the guidance of the William Head Ethno-Cultural Committee consisting of staff, managers, inmates and Dr. Lisa Gunderson, of One Love Consulting, this pilot event was extremely well received and all participants recognized its importance in a multi-cultural/multi-ethnic community. Great job!
